So, maybe a thousand years ago there was a Beja writing system, but: 1) it was rumour then; 2) it wasn't Arabic.   In this book, Matt Waters gives a detailed historical overview of the Achaemenid period while considering the manifold interpretive problems historians face in constructing and understanding its history. This book offers a Persian perspective even when relying on Greek textual sources and archaeological evidence.   This essay may be the origin of the translation of Al Mas’udi’s reference to Galen that appears widely online. Two earlier discussions (Bernard Lewis’ Race and Color in Islam and Giovanni Vantini’s Oriental Sources Concerning Nubia ()) provide different translations. Neither indicates what passage, if any, in Galen Al-Mas’udi is.
